Philosophy of Program
¨ Instructors added to maintain a minimum instructor/student ratio of 5 to 1.
¨ Emphasis is on stamina, skill and fun.
¨ Ice time is considered precious and used wisely to minimize standing around or in lineups.
¨ Drills are progressive and repetitive in order for students to build on previous successes and develop a feeling of improvement and accomplishment.
¨ Comments are positive, constructive and upbeat.
¨ Pucks are used in as many situations as possible, but not detracting from the skating skill being developed.
¨ Aerobic conditioning is an integral part of skating and the game of hockey and is made part of program.
¨ All drills should have a specific purpose and wherever possible multiple skill development is encouraged.
¨ Maximize use of ice based on student numbers.
¨ Every drill, including warm-ups should be done backward, forward, left and right whenever possible.
Equipment
¨ Students should have skates that fit properly.
¨ For 5 & 6 year olds, full hockey equipment is recommended. A helmet with face protection, shin pads, sticks and gloves are mandatory. The more protection your child has, the softer the inevitable fall and so the more positive the learning experience.
¨ Older groups must wear full protective hockey equipment including neck guards. Mouth guards are highly recommended.
Attendance – FALL only
Please check in with instructors at the beginning of each session, to be marked present before going on the ice as an award is given to those with perfect attendance. Missed sessions can be made up by doubling up on another day.
General
Please have your child dressed and ready to go on the ice 5 minutes before ice time.
Participants are required to enroll for their specific age group at the time of registration. Some movement of participants may take place at the discretion of Fred Sloan, to ensure that groups are of approximately equal skating and hockey ability.
